2010 Tony Awards: Nominee Predictions

It’s been a Broadway season dominated by straight plays and Hollywood names adorning marquees. It’s also been a weak year for the original musical, with only two entries (The Addams Family and Memphis) having original scores. Nevertheless, the Tony nominations are upon us. Before Lea Michele and Jeff Daniels announce the 2010 Tony Award nominations Tuesday morning over a live webcast on the Tony website, check out Stage Rush’s predictions on which names will make the cut and will be seen at Radio City Music Hall on June 13.

Note the lack of four nominees in the Best Original Score category. The only musicals eligible for a nomination are The Addams Family and Memphis. And although they are straight plays, Enron and Fences both have extensive scores specifically written for these productions and the Tony Awards Administration Committee has deemed them eligible for nomination. I don’t foresee the Tony Nominating Committee leaving this category shy of four nominations, although in light of this season’s dismal entries in this category, it would be admirable (and dramatic, to say the least) if the category was left devoid of nominations.

  1. Great predictions. The only one you may want to reevaluate is Eddie Redmayne in the Best Actor category. The Tony Administration Committee just ruled last week that he is eligible for Best Featured Actor.

  2. @Steve On Broadway: Thanks, Steve! I knew he won the Olivier for Best Actor, so that's why I got confused. Change made! Swapped in Christopher Walken in his place.

  3. I'm curious to see if you're correct in most of your predictions!

  4. @Liz: When I post the nominations tomorrow, I'll highlight where I was on/off base.

  5. Agreed, I feel like your list is pretty solid. I do think Ragtime will get nominated for costume design for a musical, and Kevin Chamberlin is a stretch... I think i'd be truly shocked if it happened, but anything can happen! Stoked for tomorrow morning.

  6. @Carlos: You're very right about RAGTIME for Costume Design. I paused over that, but ultimately I went with NIGHT MUSIC, because I think the committee is going to ultimately lean toward shows that are successful and still running, which RAGTIME wasn't and isn't. Regarding Kevin Chamberlin, keep in mind that these predictions aren't my desires—they're a reflection of what I've been reading and hearing recently. And I've been hearing support for him.
